Which Gold Pip Convention Does Your Broker Use?

The confusion is entirely about the definition. If your platform shows gold prices to two decimals and calls a 0.10 move one pip, a standard lot pip is ten dollars, which is the convention this calculator uses. If it calls a 0.01 move one pip, that is really a tick worth one dollar per lot. Check a couple of recent trades: divide the profit or loss by the number of pips you counted, and you will see which figure your broker is using.

Because the pip definition is slippery, many gold traders skip pips entirely and size with a dollar stop instead. If you prefer to think in dollars, the position size calculator sizes a gold trade straight from a dollar distance, so the 0.10 versus 0.01 question never affects your risk.

quiz Frequently Asked Questions

How much is 1 pip in gold?expand_more
This tool treats one gold pip as a $0.10 move, which is $10 per standard lot of 100 ounces. On a mini lot it is $1 and on a micro lot $0.10. Some brokers instead quote a $0.01 tick worth $1 per standard lot, so confirm which convention yours uses.
Is a gold pip 0.1 or 0.01?expand_more
Both are in use. This calculator uses 0.10 as one pip (worth $10 per standard lot), while some brokers call the smaller 0.01 move a pip (worth $1 per lot). They describe the same price, just at different scales, so always match your stop to your broker definition.
What is the tick value of XAUUSD?expand_more
A 0.01 tick on gold is worth $1.00 per standard lot of 100 ounces, $0.10 on a mini lot, and $0.01 on a micro lot. That is one tenth of the 0.10 pip value this tool shows, since a tick is one tenth of a pip on gold.
