How to Size an Index CFD Trade

Start by confirming the point value and currency of the index you trade, because two of the five majors are not priced in dollars. GER40 settles in euros and UK100 in pounds, so if your account is in a different currency the calculator converts the risk for you. Enter your stop in points, and it does the rest.

Because index specifications vary by broker, treat the point values in the table as typical rather than exact. Always cross-check the contract specification in your platform, then size from points. And remember that indices gap around the cash-market open and on news, so a stop is your plan, not a promise.

quiz Frequently Asked Questions

Are index lot sizes the same across brokers?expand_more
Not always. Point values and contract sizes vary between CFD brokers, and some quote indices in fractional contracts. Confirm the specification in your platform, then size from the point value it shows.
Which index has the cheapest point value?expand_more
Among the majors, US30, NAS100, and SPX500 are typically around one dollar per point, but the cash value moved per point differs with each index level. Cheaper point value does not mean lower risk if the index moves more points.
How do I size an index CFD trade?expand_more
Divide your dollar risk by the stop distance in points times the point value per lot. For a $1 per point index, a $100 risk with a 50 point stop is 2.0 lots. The calculator floors the result to your broker lot step.
